PermaLink Look for me at Microsoft Tech·Ed North America 2008 IT Professionals05/06/2008 09:15 AM
I've been invited to help Quest with there events at Microsoft Tech·Ed North America 2008 IT Professionals. They have a chalk talk and a booth. One thing they will be showing is the new web service web parts that call Domino web services. This puts a Sharepoint UI on your Notes applications. I wrote the demo Domino web services. So, I'll be at there booth showing demos and attending the chalk talk. Thinking of creating an new demo Notes database that holds pictures. Maybe I'll ask folk to let me take there picture for the demo database. Just thinking.

PermaLink Excel demo fixed with Open XML05/01/2008 10:54 AM
I've giving my Domino XML link to Excel with a chart for years.  (link)  This week I wanted to add some of the cool Excel 2007 presentation options.  The problem was that Excel, when it created the import schema, made my "freight" value a string.  So "Data Bars" didn't work until I converted the column to "Currency" or "Number".  Now I could have just added a schema to my Domino XML but I'm way to lazy for that.  So instead, hours were spent poking around Excel to solve the problem.    If we converted the column, it worked until the data was refreshed....ugg.

So I dug into the Open XML of the "DominoXMLChart2007.xlsx" file.  To do this, just rename the file to end with ".zip" instead of ".xlsx".   Then open the ZIP file and poke around.   First I found an xmlMaps.xml file and it had the Freight value set to String.  After changing it to integer and renaming the file back to .xlsx, the problem wasn't solved.  No change.  uuug.   Next I found a "Table1.xml" file.  It had the table column format set to String.  A change to integer here did the trick.  So I reposted the demo.  If you have Excel 2007, give it a try.

Now if the Microsoft folk would only let me tweak the XML map and table definition in the UI, life would be good.

PermaLink Got Gas?04/29/2008 01:08 PM
Its official, I’m now one of those annoying old guys who compare everything to when they were young. Yesterday I filled the gas tank for $40.17 and my first thought was “ I once bought a car for $40.”

PermaLink Notes Utility needed for web services04/28/2008 02:00 PM
I’ve been working with Quest on integrating Notes with Sharepoint. They have cool web parts to hold Notes documents. Also, they have web parts the sit on top of Notes web services. I wrote the web services for the demo database. It work pretty well. However, to create the Get, Create, Delete, and Update web service methods in Domino Designer, although easy, required a lot of code typing. Seems to me, one could create a Note application to create all the code without much difficulty. I’d have a form that asked you what document you wanted to create the web service for with options. It would present you with the list of Items and you could just pick what should be exposed. When you click the submit, it would create the code text. This could be and LSS file or using DXL create a script library and a Web Service design element. This wizard database could sit on your Domino 7 (or up) server. Then the Web Parts that consume these web services could just point to this database. Done.

PermaLink Earth Day 200804/22/2008 10:08 AM
Well it's Earth Day and at Microsoft they encourage folks to ride their bikes to work. Even thought it was 35 degrees this morning, I rode in. Going home should be nice - sunny and 50's. May 19 - 21 I'll be in LA. Hopefully there will be time to go rollerblading at the beach. Looking forward to Summer.

PermaLink Five years after04/02/2008 09:45 AM
Five years ago, on April fools day, I collected a check for 17 weeks pay and signed up for unemployment after being selected as surplus skills by IBM. So much has happened in those five years. Life is an adventure but sometimes we need a kick in the butt to make changes and take chances. Looking back it looks like I needed that kick. So I'm grateful for IBM. Still I miss my friends back in my old life...even if I do get to go to Lotusphere every year. So April fools day is a day to celebrate. So "Happy April Fools Day!"
